Pocket METAR has a built in wind component calculator that will
calculate the side and crosswind components.
If you are a pilot you know that this is a required part of the
preflight check. Some of you might want to use the calculated wind numbers
for your own checks or calculations but I guess most of us are only interested
in if the wind will create a crosswind component that is higher than the maximum
allowed for the type of aircraft utilized.
The software has a setting for maximum crosswind, if the calculation gets a
result that is higher than that, the calculated crosswind will be printed in red
to give a quick visual indication that limits will be exceeded.
The smart thing with the wind calculation is that it will use
wind information from the stored METAR report.
If the selected airports has data stored about it's runways you need only to
select the runway you want to take off from and Pocket METAR will do the
calculations automatically for
you.
If no METAR or runway data exist for your position you can enter the numbers for
hand to use is as a general purpose wind calculation device.
