Intervju - Peter Lyse Hansen, Hatesphere Apparently you´re the kings of Danish metal, so please let us know what you´re all about! ...blood, beers and Satan... death thrash from Denmark with a sense of melodies and groove. Where did you get the name Hatesphere from? I guess we all had a part to say about that. We were tired of our old name, Necrosis, and wanted to get a new one more fitting to our music. At the same time we were about to record our debut album, so we thought it was the perfect time to get a new name. Suddenly we came up with the name HateSphere and thougth it was pretty cool, so we have been stuck with that since then. You just finished a long tour through Europe with Kreator, Dark Tranquillity and Ektomorf. How was the tour and there´s gotta be some fun stories you could share with us? The tour was really cool, we played in front of alot of crazy people, met lots of new and old fans and sold lots of merchandise, so we cant complain. Our tourbus with us, Dark Tranquillity and Ektomorf, had a great time with lots of drinking and singing along to old Dio songs. Yeah, luckily for us we will meet the cool Dark Tranquillity guys again when we play Gothenburg here in March. Funny stories from the tour must simply just be lots of great drinking parties in the bus along with the trip to the top of the Eiffel Tower. For a man like me, who are afraid of heights, this was a big thing, he he... You also toured with Kirk and Crowbar some time ago. Tell us about that! It was the summer of 2004, we played a tour with Exodus and after that ten days with Crowbar. The guys were really down to earth, and it ended up with the gig in Berlin, were Kirk played in Heinz´ (guitar in HateSphere) underwear... no words needed, he he!!! Please tell us a bit about each album! Songs, stories from the recording sessions, producer etc. "Hatesphere" This was our debut album and therefore something special for us. We recorded it with Jacob Hansen (Invocator) in Aabenraa and Borsing studios in Denmark. We used only 11 days including mixing, so it went pretty fast. The album contains songs like "Bloodsoil", "Hate" and "Picture this" which are all still on our live set once in a while. The funny thing about the album is that we also used some old songs for the album, songs that had been written two years before we went into studio. And I have to mention that Jacob sang all his parts naked in the studio, literally!!!The album was supposed to be released on Jacob Hansens record label at that time, Serious Entertainment, but shortly after the recordings the label went bankrupt, so we shopped it around and ended up on Scarlet Records from Italy... they ended up releasing our next two full lengths and a mini album. The debut album got lots of great reviews and at that time we were pretty unknown to everybody, so for us it was a great start. The album was released in both Europe and Japan. "HateSphere" has just been released in a limited vinyl edition of 666 copies by the Danish Die Hard Music. "Bloodred hatred" Our second full length album and it went on to be very successful. We decided to try something new this time regarding producer, so we went to Jailhouse Studios in Denmark, where we teamed up with Tommy Hansen, who´s most famous for his work with power metal bands like Pretty Maids and Helloween. He gave us that different sound that we wanted and came up with lots of great ideas that we ended up using. This album got us some very good attention especially in Denmark and Germany, and we also did our first real tour of Denmark. This time we got the album released both in Europe, Russia, Japan and then finally in North America through Century Media Records. At the same time we got our first real European tour with The Haunted and Mastodon, so we opened up a lot of doors there. Since that we have been cruising around Europe to build up our reputation as an ass kicking live band, and that has got us more great tours and important experiences on the stage. Songs like "Disbeliever", "Insanity arise", "Kicking ahead" and "Low life vendetta" are stand out tracks from that album, which ended up being more thrashy and more fast than the debut. "Something old, something new, something borrowed and something black" Before this album we had gotten two new members, Heinz on guitar and Anders on drums, so this album was meant both as an appetizer for the next full length but also as a little thing for us to show that we could still make everything right with the new members. The album contains one new song, "Release the pain", two cover songs of Ozzy (Bark at the moon) and Anthrax (Caught in a mosh) and four live songs recorded in our home town, Aarhus. We recorded the album at the Antfarm Studio in Aarhus together with producer Tue Madsen (The Haunted, Mnemic, Heaven Shall Burn a.m.o.), who is a good friend of ours. As I mentioned before, this album was the studio debut of both Heinz and Anders, and they both did a really good job. We had a great time recording it, since we always could take our bikes and go home.. it only takes about 10 or 15 minutes... "Ballet of the brute" Our third full length and the famous "make or break it"-album. Again we returned to Jailhouse Studios in Denmark with Tommy Hansen producing it. In comparison with "Bloodred Hatred" this album is more brutal and more in your face. The entire album was written in only three months, and for HateSphere this is a short period. But it had a great effect, the album was fresh and the songs really catchy. The album still contained the typical HateSphere stuff but we also experimented with an instrumental song (The beginning and the end), a very slow song (Only the strongest...) and then finally also our most melodic song to date (Last cut, last head)... so the album contains a bit of each, he he. People liked the album and even the dear Swedish people had to surrender, as we won the soundcheck in Close-Up Magazine. After the album was released we went on tour with both Exodus and then Crowbar, and we played summer festivals like Party-San, With Full Force and Summer Breeze. In the fall of 2004 we went on a Danish tour and after that played lots of gigs in both Italy, Austria, Germany and Iceland. Epspecially Iceland was pretty amazing as we also did some cool seightseeing. In November 2004 we signed a world wide deal with SPV/Steamhammer, and then went into studio in December, to record our newest ep "The killing ep". Who´s the main song writer in the band and how do you usually work on a new song? I usually write most of the music but on the latest album also Heinz and Jacob did some riffing. We usually come up with some riffs and then put them together in the rehearsal room. Me and Anders (drums) usually go into rehearsal room a bit before the others and then put together some riffs. The others come around, and give us their opinions and then we throw it all out again, he he. How did you end up on SPV? We played in Hamburg last april and a guy from SPV saw us and was pretty amazed. At the same time we were in the process of deciding which labels could be interesting for us, since our contract with Scarlet was over. We had actually been talking about SPV, so it was kinda funny that they suddenly showed their interest without us ever contacting them. We were in the good situation that we had offers from all the big companies Nuclear Blast, Roadrunner, Century Media and then also SPV, so we had good offers to choose between. We chose SPV for numerous reasons but the main reason was that we would be the only band playing this kind of music, so we would have alot of back up from the label and not drown in all the other bands. As for now we are very satisfied, and everything has worked out really well. What´s in the near future for Hatesphere? Right now we are on tour with Morbid Angel through Europe and will be visiting Sweden again, so you will get the chance to see us. After that we will play some festivals throughout the summer, write and record the new album, and then tour again in the fall. After the next album we will also be working alot on going to both Japan and USA to kick some serious ass. So the future looks exciting and should contain lots of gigs, beer drinking and puking on stage, he he..... Name your five favorite albums and why you picked those five! Type O Negative - Bloody kisses Extremely melancholic but still also with lots of humor in it. Goddamn good music that I never get tired of! Nevermore - Dead heart in a dead world Nevermore turned more aggressive but still very melodic, this album contains all killers, no fillers!
